According to recent press reports, the FLDS consummate their marriages in their Temple. Is this something peculiar to the modern FLDS, or was this a practice in early Mormonism that the FLDS have preserved? Are/were witnesses involved? Has any reader consummated an LDS Temple? (presumably clandestinely w/o a bed).

I also heard those reports and was absolutely aghast, not because I’m FLDS but because I’m LDS and many people wonder what happens in our temples.
But before we all jump to conclusions…
I would like to think that maybe a cot or bed was available to those infirmed, or tired or workers overcome by the “spirit”.
That certainly makes more sense than the sordid explanation given in the press used for sensational and titilation purposes.

Look at the cover of the October 2007 Ensign. It’s a couple carrying what looks like overnight bags, grinning broadly, and the caption invites “Come to the Temple.”

No, no and no. I’d be extremely surprised if the allegation about the FLDS is even true. Granted, they are coming up with more and more ludicrous things year after year, so it’s possible I guess.
But no, there has never been anything like that in the LDS Church and there never will be. The important thing to remember: There are a lot of religious groups out there who hate us and are willing to spread lies and deceit to try to damage our reputation in this world. Emperor Nero of the Roman Empire burned down Rome and then blamed it on the Christians? Why? Because everyone hated them and nobody understood them. People were willing to believe anything bad anyone said about them.
That same is true of the “Mormon” Church, which is really the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We’re a bit non-traditional. We openly contradict several false traditions that all of Christianity had adopted as “absolutes”. We disagree with the Trinitarian doctrine. We have additional scriptures beyond the Bible. We claim to be God’s Church restored to the earth. Just those few things are plenty of reasons for certain people to hate our religion and seek to attack and defame us at every turn.
I’ve heard all sorts of lies that I can verify without a doubt are false of course. “Mormons have horns.” “Mormons worship Satan.” “Mormons perform human sacrifice.” “Mormons worship cows.” “Mormons worship dogs.”
If it helps the case at all, I was a temple worker for about a year. Not only do I know what goes on in there, if there was any “behind the scenes” goings on. There is nothing that happens in the LDS temple that is out of character for a devout Christian religion. All of it is centered and focused on Christ and his plan of salvation for us.
For those who refuse to believe me, you’re getting as much truth from such sources as the Weekly World News. “BATBOY ATTACKS!!!!”
